Beat the clock, not yourself. Once you're in the air, mentally switch to Barcelona time: eat and sleep toward when it's night there, not LA. Hydrate more than feels necessary, keep the alcohol minimal, and use the eye mask and earplugs through what should be your sleep hours. On landing, get outside into daylight and keep moving, don't lie down. If you truly need one, a single 20-30 minute nap is fine, then hold out for the 22:30 bedtime below, that's the whole reset.
You left LAX at 20:50 last night. Today is only about arriving without wrecking tomorrow daylight, a walk, an early dinner, lights out on Barcelona time.

Star Alliance Lounge (Mon, LAX) — a last-minute, at-the-airport call, Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT), Level 6, airside past security.
This is a real paid lounge, not free and not Priority Pass: about $65-70 per person, ~$130-140 total for both of you. It replaced the free Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse plan because that lounge has a hard Priority Pass blackout 17:00-20:00 and LA traffic to LAX gives no real guarantee of arriving before 17:00, too much risk of getting turned away with nowhere else to go. This is pending arrival, decide once you're actually at LAX, not a locked-in plan — the alternative is simply eating dinner somewhere before or near the airport and grabbing a drink at a regular bar instead. If you do decide to go in: book it right there on your phone before walking over — staralliance.com/paid-lounge-entry, walk-up isn't offered, so it has to be an online booking even if it's minutes ahead of walking in. Pick a 3-hour arrival window that covers whenever you actually walk up (e.g. if it's 19:00 when you decide, book 18:00-21:00 or 19:00-22:00, whichever the site offers), so it comfortably covers the 20:50 departure. Entering any Star Alliance frequent-flyer number at booking knocks a small discount off the price, worth doing if either of you has one. The lounge is open until 00:30 and there's no forced exit once you're in for your booked window, so there's no blackout to watch the clock against. Inside: a full buffet plus a noodle bar, 8 shower suites, and an outdoor terrace with fire pits, a real, above-average lounge.
Out of the lounge and over toward the TBIT West gates, LEVEL's own gates, on your own schedule from here, well ahead of the 20:50 boarding.

Compression socks on before boarding, off once you're up and walking tomorrow. Get up and move or flex your ankles every hour or two. Long-haul kit packed (see Prep & packing) so the eye mask, earplugs and charger are already at your seat, not in the overhead bin.

Just missed it: Spain's National Day was yesterday (Oct 12). Normal schedules should be back by today, but reconfirm any holiday hours a small independent shop or restaurant has posted.
After arrival
Clear passport control and collect bags first. Do not request an Uber upon touchdown or reserve a fixed-time arrival pickup. Once you are ready to walk to the pickup point, open your existing Uber app, set destination to Room Mate Anna, Carrer d'Aragó 271, and compare its live fare, ETA and pickup walk. If the app pickup means an inconvenient parking-area walk, looks expensive against the €30-45 taxi allowance, or takes longer, follow the Taxi signs to the official T1 ground-floor arrivals rank, opposite the exit. Join the queue and give the driver the hotel address. Pay the licensed black-and-yellow taxi at the end. No city bus or hotel walk with bags.
Your first EU passport entry may take longer than expected; do not schedule a fixed car meeting against the 17:15 landing. Bolt and Cabify are optional ride-booking apps like Uber, not buses or taxi booths. You do not need to download either to follow this plan: Uber plus the signed airport taxi rank suffice. App pickup may be in designated parking; Cabify lists its T1 meeting area on departures level 3. The taxi is metered, not a fixed fare; allow about €30-45 for the car in ordinary traffic. Table for 2 booked by email, 21:00 to 22:30, at C/ Montcada 2 in El Born, not the bodega-round-the-corner plan this used to be. A 90-minute seating, so order early. If you land wrecked and want out, phone +34 932 68 30 03 rather than leaving them a no-show.
Order: The L'Escala anchovies (a real Catalan benchmark, order these first), the crispy oxtail with foie gras, ham croquetas, pan amb tomàquet. To drink: the house-made vermouth, or ask for a natural wine by the glass off their 120-bottle list, either pairs well with the oxtail.

Don't fight the jet lag with a 6pm coffee. A 20-minute walk in daylight resets you faster; eat by 21:00 and you'll actually sleep.

House pickLook for it on the walk
- In Plaça Sant Felip Neri, the church wall is pocked with holes, shrapnel from a 1938 fascist air raid that killed 42 people sheltering there, most of them children. The city left it.
- The “medieval” stone bridge on Carrer del Bisbe looks 600 years old. It was built in 1928, for the 1929 World's Fair. Half of the “Gothic” Quarter is romantic early-1900s reconstruction.
- Roman columns from the Temple of Augustus hide in a courtyard off Carrer del Paradís, 2,000 years old, free, and almost nobody looks.
The things you'd wish you knew
You're walking on Barcino, the Roman city founded ~15 BC. The street grid of the Gothic Quarter still follows the Roman one; the Cathedral sits on the old forum.
Catalan is its own language, not a Spanish dialect, closer to Occitan and old Provençal. “Thank you” is gràcies, “good evening” is bona nit. Everyone also speaks Spanish; starting in Catalan is a small kindness that lands.
