Beat the clock, not yourself. Once you're in the air, mentally switch to Barcelona time: eat and sleep toward when it's night there, not LA. Hydrate more than feels necessary, keep the alcohol minimal, and use the eye mask and earplugs through what should be your sleep hours. On landing, get outside into daylight and keep moving, don't lie down. If you truly need one, a single 20-30 minute nap is fine, then hold out for the 22:30 bedtime below, that's the whole reset.
You left LAX at 20:50 last night. Today is only about arriving without wrecking tomorrow daylight, a walk, an early dinner, lights out on Barcelona time.

Before you leave the door
Don't fight the jet lag with a 6pm coffee. A 20-minute walk in daylight resets you faster; eat by 21:00 and you'll actually sleep.
JulianThe €18 “menú turístic” boards on Carrer Ferran and around the Cathedral. Walk three streets toward Sant Pere or El Born, same food, half the price.

- In Plaça Sant Felip Neri, the church wall is pocked with holes, shrapnel from a 1938 fascist air raid that killed 42 people sheltering there, most of them children. The city left it.
- The “medieval” stone bridge on Carrer del Bisbe looks 600 years old. It was built in 1928, for the 1929 World's Fair. Half of the “Gothic” Quarter is romantic early-1900s reconstruction.
- Roman columns from the Temple of Augustus hide in a courtyard off Carrer del Paradís, 2,000 years old, free, and almost nobody looks.
The things you'd wish you knew
You're walking on Barcino, the Roman city founded ~15 BC. The street grid of the Gothic Quarter still follows the Roman one; the Cathedral sits on the old forum.
Catalan is its own language, not a Spanish dialect, closer to Occitan and old Provençal. “Thank you” is gràcies, “good evening” is bona nit. Everyone also speaks Spanish; starting in Catalan is a small kindness that lands.
